Symptoms May Continue Decade After Menopause Ends
July 11, 2018
Sorry, but it’s not good news. Those horrible hot flashes and night sweats don’t necessarily disappear once menopause ends. According to a new study recently published in the Journal of North American Menopause Society, more than 40 percent of women were still experiencing vasomotor symptoms after 60.
- The Stats: The fairly large study, data was collected from nearly 5,000 women from researchers at the Mayo Clinic, reveals that women are still suffering from hot flash-inducing hormonal balances even after menopause. Of the 4,956 women who participated, more 379 or 41.2 percent reported issues with hot flashes and/or night sweats.
- Treatment: Not surprisingly, women currently using hormone therapy were less likely to report menopausal symptoms. Limiting caffeinated beverages, alcohol and chocolate, which have been shown to increase hot flashes, insomnia and night sweats, is recommended for women older than 70. In addition, exercise can help ward off some of these symptoms.
- Unmet Medical Need: This study shines a light on a population that has generally been ignored in this area. Because the medical community doesn’t have much data on older women experiencing these symptoms, many aren’t receiving treatment for these debilitating issues. Only 21 percent of the participants reported using hormone therapy.
The good news is that post-menopausal women can feel (and sleep) better. Hormone therapy helps alleviate these symptoms. And there are natural hormone replacement options available.
