What is the Perineoplasty Procedure
Childbirth can cause a whole host of issues and one of them is tearing of the perineal tissue. This painful occurrence can lead to scarring which can also cause other complications ranging from urinary issues and vaginal laxity to a decrease in sexual satisfaction.
What Exactly is that Area?
The perineum sits between the vagina and the rectum. This area of tissue can often tear during a vaginal birth and will often scar afterward. That healing process might lead to disfiguration of the perineum which in turn results in vaginal looseness.
Why Does Childbirth Cause Tears?
When a baby heads through the birthing canal, the body has to make room for it and does so by widening the vagina, essentially stretching the tissues and all those surrounding muscles. During that process, the perineum may be torn. That can lead to postpartum vaginal laxity that reduces friction during sex and results in diminished sexual satisfaction.
What Options Are There to Fix It?
Surgical procedures to tighten the vaginal muscles are not a new phenomenon, but in the past they were done simply to repair the area, not for sexual or aesthetic reasons. Yet, more recently women are turning to procedures such as perineoplasty to improve their sex lives or to improve upon the appearance of their vaginal area.
One of those options is something called a perineoplasty. This procedure narrows the general length of the area, removes any excess skin and tightens all the surrounding muscles. It will narrow the entrance to the vagina, which provides sexual benefits for women since it will now be tighter during sex. This procedure is often performed at the same time as vaginoplasty, but it can also be a single surgery.
It’s ideal for patients suffering not only from the complications of vaginal laxity but also for women interested in improving the appearance of their postpartum perineum.
Return your Perineum to its Pre-Pregnancy State
This outpatient surgery usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes and requires little downtime. Dr. Ghozland specializes in this surgery. He will make a small incision in the wall of the vagina, using a laser and any excess skin will be removed, and the muscles and tissues will be joined together again.
Patients usually need about an hour to recover post-op and are able return home the same day. Patients should expect some minor bleeding during the first few days following the procedure. Women should keep the incision clean and dry and stay hydrated to avoid constipation. Women can resume normal activities within four weeks.
